Zukofsky
I am really enjoying Louis Zukofsky's "A". When I first read it on my own, I was confused because there are so many ideas being thrown at you at one time. When we were assigned to categorize these things in class they became a lot more clear to me. I like his ideas and the way that he portrays them. Zukofsky seesm to be extremely interested in religion. I noticed ideas from Catholicism and Judaism. I also think that he is interested in immigration and assimilation. When i really started thinking about what he was trying to do with all of these different images, I began to see a collage of American ideas. Zukofsky brings up things that have taken placer in our history as well as ideas of the present. I see his work as a collage of everything and everyone in the United States. I don't know if I am reading this wrong but this is what I see when I put all of these thoughts together. Everything seems to fit to create this feeling. I think that this is the main reason that I really enjoy his work.

You definitely have a line on the material inspiring this poem. (Inspire by the way has it's origin in breath, i.e. the life-sustaining stuff) the poem's oxygen.
Collage describes the mix, much like what LZ meant when he used the musical term ( a bit more specfiic but with a similar sense of combining multilpe parts) of the fugue. Many have wondered about why the attraction of music and musical terms for LZ in stead of the visual.
For me, the fact that language and music both unfold in time is one possibilitiy. THere's also the emphasis on the ear, a similar way of experiencing music/language.
I also like the sense though that in music, the fugue/collage can overlap sounds. Whereas in the visual collage (before Photoshop anyhow) things tend to be solid, there's not so much transparency or multi-layering..... which is certainly one ofthe things LZ likes to do.... as a means of thickening up the soup.
